6.4. Single Object Description:

The monument stands in the park, in front of the new Mayor’s office of Cornetu commune, on a square concrete platform, in an octagonal green area facing the Cornetu Commune Mayor’s Office. The monument is made of a two steps composite concrete base, over it a square plane prism stands, made of carved whitewash stone, and from it the marble monument is placed. The monument is a rectangular section obelisk, with a two steps pedestal. At one third of its height, the monument is sloped in an elegant profile. In the upper area, the obelisk displays a capital with triangular pediments, palmettes and flower ornament. Over this structure an eagle watches. On the obelisk’s main façade a young woman is sculpted, seated and veiled, holding a book and “1916-1918 Cornetu” is written on it. In the background, a cross is sculpted. Above the relief sculpture it’s written: “For our country. This is what our ancestors taught us to die defending our nation. We hail ROMANIA until death!” Under the statue there’s a profile like a pedestal for the relief sculpture, and on it it’s written: “The heroes who died on the field of honor” and under these, on the obelisk the names of heroes who fell in battle are listed.

The monument is placed in an octagonal green area, on a square shaped concrete platform. The obelisk displays a rectangular section.

6.4.2. Facades:

On the obelisk’s main façade a young woman is sculpted, seated and veiled, holding a book and “1916-1918 Cornetu” is written on it. In the background, a cross is sculpted. Above the relief sculpture it’s written: “FOR OUR COUNTRY. This is what our ancestors taught us to die defending our nation. We hail ROMANIA until death!” Under the statue there’s a profile like a pedestal for the relief sculpture, and on it it’s written: “The heroes who died on the field of honor” and under these, on the obelisk the names of heroes who fell in battle are listed.On the right hand side, on the first lower segments of the marble obelisk, the names of the heroes and their regiments are listed. The last inscription is that of the author “Sculptor N. Miheli, Bucharest, Șerban Vodă 229”. On the rear façade, on the lower segments of the marble obelisk, the commissioner is written: “This monument was built at the request of the Cornetu commune Reading House, by subscription from the local villagers and by the initiative of the following members… Chairman Iuliu Valaori” and then the army insignia are engraved – a helmet, a sword, a rifle, following these elements, members of Cornetu Reading House are listed. On the left hand side façade, on the first lower segments of the marble obelisk, names of heroes and their regiments are written.
